Cicada Songs

The calendar may say it's Spring, but it's definitely Summer here in good ol' SC! With highs in the 90s, I'm very thankful Uncle Sam returned some of the money he borrowed from us so I could get my car's AC fixed. Whew mercy!

While outside today, I heard a sound that never fails to make me smile -- a cicada singing. (I was going to post a pic of a cicada, but it is so ugly, it wigged me out. In case you're interested in these little buggers - heehee! - here's a link to the National Geographic cicada page.)

Now, for those of you who don't know what a cicada is, they are basically really big, very loud crickets. VERY. LOUD. And they have an unmistakable sound that says "Hey, you! Summer's finally here! Pull out the flip flops and make some lemonade!" You see, cicadas only sing when it's hot outside ... usually they start in early to mid-summer, but given the heat wave we've had lately, I think they are a bit confused. But I'm cool with that, because cicada songs remind me of my childhood summers ... swinging in the backyard, riding bikes through the neighborhood, sleeping in late, fishing with my dad, playing in the sprinkler ... good times!

Is there anything that reminds you of your childhood summers? A trip to a favorite vacation spot? Grilling out? A favorite activity? Please share ... I'd love to hear what you have to say!

Now ... I'm going to go get a bowl of ice cream ... it's getting hot in here.
