About Me

Hey there, and welcome to The Backyard Swing! Come sit a spell...

I'm Mandy, a 40-something, wife, mom, Jesus follower, born and bred South Carolinian (or Sandlapper for you locals!), daughter, sister, friend, frustrated decorator, and all-around average woman.

Thanks for joining me! I want you to feel right at home here. My dream is to use this little corner of the Web to encourage you and make you smile by sharing my cray cray life, and help you to realize you are not alone in this big ol' world.

We are all imperfect beings created by a perfect God and He loves us, no matter what. Amen.

You won't find perfection here ... not even close. I'm all about honesty and realism.

You will see smiles, tears, struggles, celebrations ... and LOADS and LOADS of laundry. (Seriously, yall. How do four people go through SO. MANY. CLOTHES. in a week?)

Oh, and I use lots of words. I mean, why say something in 5 words when 25 will do?

Consider this as a place where you can come to rest and just be yourself, and maybe pick up some helpful tips or encouragement along the way. Where we can just BE REAL together.

"Therefore, encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing." - I Thessalonians 5:11

So what's up with the name "The Backyard Swing"?

As long as I can remember, there was a swing in my backyard. I'm not talking about one of those kid-size swingsets or a tire swing. I'm talking about one of those big, couch-size swings ... one where at least 3 people could sit at the same time.

Whenever I would have a bad day, or need some alone time (which doesn't happen very often for an extrovert!), I would go swing. And swing. And swing. I could sit out there for hours.

Once I got married, though, I had to leave the swing at Mama and Daddy's house. So no swing for a long while.

Flash forward to when Hubby and I were celebrating our 7th wedding anniversary. He asked what I'd like for a present, and I immediately said, "A backyard swing!" So we jumped in the truck and headed to Lowe's, and brought home our first married backyard swing.

A few months later, I found out I was preggie with our D-bug. And boy howdy! That swing has gotten a workout ever since!

(Side note: Our old swing met its demise shortly before we moved to our new house, so I'm currently swingless.) (Swingless is totally a word.)

I realized that I do my best thinking when I'm swinging away. Something about being outside, the fresh air brushing across my face, clears out the cobwebs and helps me to think clearer.

And so ... here we are. My proverbial Backyard Swing. I'm glad you decided to join me.

A few things about me:

  • I love Jesus, but not nearly as much as He loves us. (I Timothy 1:15)
  • I married the only guy I ever dated, and I was the only girl he ever dated -- we like to say we got it right on the first try! LOL!
  • We've been married for 20 wonderful, hard, crazy years.
Mr. & Mrs. (Aren't we so young cute?!)
  • We have two little boys -- D-bug (age 12) and Beebee (age 9). On a side note, I started sprouting gray hair about 12 years ago.
D-bug and Beebee -- my loves!
  • Motherhood is totally kicking my butt, but I'm loving every minute of it.
  • We also have two canine children, Fitzwilliam (Fitz for short) and Georgiana (Georgie for short). (Bonus points if you can guess where those names come from!)
Top is Georgie, bottom is Fitz -- snuggly!

Things I love (in no particular order):

  • Loving on my family and friends (this usually involves food and sweet tea)
  • Jesus. Grace. Mercy. Forgiveness.
  • Hanging with my Hubby
  • Jane Austen (see our puppies' names)
  • Fresh-from-the-oven chocolate chip cookies
  • White beadboard, blue mason jars, farmhouse sinks, barn wood, cozy quilts
  • The Smokies (anytime of year, but especially in the fall)
  • Books (bound and electronic)
  • All things houses ... design, architecture, open houses, floor plans ...
  • Sci-fi, especially Star Trek, Firefly and Doctor Who
  • Organized chaos
  • Superman (Best. Superhero. Ever.)
  • Belly laughs, especially when they come from my kiddos
  • All things paper -- paper calendars, notebook paper, note cards, sticky notes ... it's all good
  • Pilot G-2 .07 pens in any color
  • My Kindle
  • Snuggling with my menfolk and puppyfolk on our cozy couch (IKEA Karlstad sectional - also known as "The Sleep Vortex")

Thanks for stopping by! I'd love to hear from you (though I'm totally OK with "lurkers"). Leave a comment or click here.
